Math Midway Training - Interactive Math Exhibit available for Street Fairs and Other Events

Ring of Fire

The disc of laser light is invisible - until a visitor places a solid object in its path.  Then beautiful and surprising cross sections instantly appear: hexagons in a cube, parabolas in a cone, or contour maps on the surface of a hand.

The ring of eye-safe lasers is large enough to allow multiple visitors to interact with the exhibit at once, providing an opportunity for collaborative learning.  Every three-dimensional shape hides a multitude of unexpected cross sections, and the Ring of Fire allows visitors to explore them effortlessly, making the previously hidden geometric relationships suddenly visible.
